The principle

State comes first

Most destructive habits are not a failure of willpower. They are a way of regulating state: relieving anxiety, distracting, finding relief. The habit serves a function.

Recovery Integrity doesn't fight the habit directly. Instead, it develops the ability to notice the impulse before it becomes action, and to choose a different response. This is a skill — and it can be trained.
